Novel Writing

I think it’s time to start #writing

My notes on my new novel have reached 12 pages and 6,500 words. I have come up with a focal point to build my story around. The more I think about it, the more convoluted the story becomes. I think it’s time to start writing!

I seem to have also discovered my main writing genre, despite the fact that there are other genres I would like to write in. The book I originally planned to write next was adult fiction with a little bit of magic and fantasy thrown in. It was going to be dark, and in many ways, devious. I still really want to write that book. However, it seems to make more sense in this moment to maintain the momentum I have built with Valley of the Bees and stick with future-fantastic dystopia.

I also can’t ignore the fact that this new novel is demanding to take center stage at the moment!

I’m not sure I would classify this new novel as post-apocalyptic like Valley of the Bees, though. There is no major “world-ending” event in this one. There is, however, a major political upheaval that changes society in a huge way. And, it all stems from “The Great Rift of 2016.” That’s my line. Don’t any of you try to steal it from me!

The problem with writing a novel based on current events that are still unfolding is that things might yet change on the political landscape. I might be revising the history of my story world right up until the novel goes to press. I think I’m up for that challenge. What do you think? Is it a bad idea to write a novel based on current events that are still in the making? Will my book be outdated before it even goes to press?

I guess there’s only one way to find out. #amwriting

  1. When I began writing “Perceval’s Secret,” years ago, I imagined that there’d be a major “The Change” right around now that would result in a new political party made up of politicians from both major parties. That new political party, the NEP, would represent the interests of the wealthy elite and eventually become the ONLY political party in America. It would restructure the government to serve the elites’ interests and only pay lip service to “democracy” and “elections.” This is the America my main character grew up in. I never imagined in a million years that I’d witness an American election that was just like what I’d imagined, or that the government now has the potential to turn out like I’d imagined. Moral of story: be careful! LOL
